The scene
Small-town pilgrimage destination. All serious San Daniele producers (Prolongo, Bagatto, Testa Quirino, Principe, others) operate from within the town's narrow zone. Tours are easy to arrange directly with producers.

San Daniele del Friuli is a hilltop town of about 8,000 people in northeastern Italy — far from the major Italian cities, in the foothills of the Carnic Alps where the alpine air meets Adriatic marine influence. The town's prosciutto tradition is the entire reason to visit — the Prosciutto di San Daniele DOP is produced exclusively within the town's boundaries, and the production density relative to population is staggering (one DOP-licensed producer per ~300 residents). The town hosts the annual 'Aria di Festa' festival in late June where all the producers open their cellars for public tasting and tours.

Beyond prosciutto, the surrounding Friulian region has a quietly significant food culture (frico cheese-and-potato pancake, gnocchi di susine, Friulian white wines including Friulano grape and Ribolla Gialla). San Daniele itself is a serious pilgrimage destination for cured-meat travelers but requires real commitment to reach — closest major airport is Venice (1.5 hours by car) or Trieste (1.5 hours).

Travel note
The annual Aria di Festa festival (late June) is the best time to visit — all producers open simultaneously. Outside of the festival, individual producer tours need advance booking. The town gets cold in winter (Carnic Alps influence); summer is the ideal visiting season.
